At Lionel University, our faculty bring a wealth of professional expertise and real-world experience to the classroom. This month, we're excited to spotlight Heidi Girolamo, an adjunct faculty member whose passion for psychology, exercise science, and student development has made a lasting impact on our learners.

Building Courses and Supporting Students

Heidi has been teaching at Lionel University since March 2020 and has contributed to the development of coursework for both the Psychology of Exercise and General Psychology programs. Her commitment to creating engaging and relevant learning experiences helps students connect academic concepts to their personal and professional lives.

Beyond Lionel University, Heidi brings approximately 13 years of experience in higher education. Her career has spanned health education, career services for health professions students, and leadership roles supporting future healthcare professionals. Most recently, she directed a scholarship program for Physician Assistant students.

Throughout much of her career, Heidi has worked in career services, helping students identify career paths, build professional skills, and prepare for success after graduation through workshops and individualized career coaching.

Students interested in advancing their education can explore Lionel University's full range of academic offerings through the Programs Overview, including undergraduate and graduate degree pathways.

A Passion for Adult Learners

One of Heidi's favorite aspects of teaching at Lionel University is working with adult learners.

She appreciates the flexibility online education provides for students who are balancing multiple responsibilities, whether they are parents, military service members, working professionals, or all three. Heidi finds inspiration in the diverse experiences students bring to the classroom and values the rich discussions that emerge from those varied perspectives.

"Adult learners bring incredible life experiences and unique viewpoints that enrich the learning environment for everyone," she says.

Whether students are pursuing a Bachelor's Degree or continuing their education through one of Lionel University's Master's Degree programs, Heidi believes education should be accessible, practical, and supportive of students' unique life circumstances.

Research Focus: Supporting Mother-Athletes

Heidi's research interests center on exercise psychology, particularly the experiences of mother-athletes.

Her research explored the identity shifts women experience after becoming mothers and how those changes influence participation in physical activity. Specifically, she studied mother runners, examining the factors that help some women continue running while others struggle to maintain their exercise routines.

Her work seeks to better understand how support systems, communities, and resources can help mothers stay engaged in physical activity and maintain an important aspect of their personal identity and well-being.

Students interested in exercise science and fitness-related careers can explore Lionel University's Associate of Science in Exercise Science, which provides a strong foundation for health, fitness, and wellness professions.

Life Outside the Classroom

When she's not teaching or researching, Heidi enjoys spending time with her family and pursuing a variety of interests.

A self-described Disney enthusiast, she loves visiting Disneyland with her two daughters. Fitness remains an important part of her life, with a background in competitive running and CrossFit training. At the same time, Heidi embraces her creative side through her extensive theater experience.

She's also a dedicated coffee lover who enjoys discovering new coffee shops, exploring beaches, and finding parks where she can spend quality time with her family.

Her passion for fitness aligns with many of Lionel University's professional development opportunities, including the Master Trainer Program and the Lionel Certified Personal Trainer Program, which help students and professionals advance their expertise in the health and fitness industry.

A Distinguished Athletic Background

Long before entering higher education, Heidi excelled as a competitive athlete.

She frequently ran a sub-five-minute mile and earned All-American honors twice in track and cross-country competition. Her dedication to athletics not only shaped her personal journey but also continues to inform her academic interests in exercise psychology and human performance.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Through her teaching, research, and student-centered approach, Heidi Girolamo exemplifies Lionel University's commitment to fostering meaningful learning experiences.

Whether she's helping students understand psychological principles, explore careers, or navigate life's many transitions, Heidi brings passion, expertise, and authenticity to every interaction.

We're proud to have Heidi as part of the Lionel University faculty community and grateful for the impact she continues to make on our students' educational journeys.
