Introduction

At Lionel University, students learn from faculty members who understand both the science behind health and human performance and the realities of working in the fitness industry. Dr. Erin Nitschke, Dean of Academic Innovation and Graduate Studies, brings more than 23 years of experience in higher education, health coaching, curriculum development, and the health and fitness profession to the Lionel community.

Throughout her career, Dr. Nitschke has remained focused on one central goal: preparing the next generation of exercise science and health coaching professionals to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

A Career Dedicated to Education and Professional Development

Dr. Nitschke has taught at Lionel University for the past year and a half, helping guide graduate education and academic innovation across the institution. Her work includes supporting evidence-based curriculum development, creating engaging learning experiences, and ensuring that students can connect scientific research to the situations they will encounter throughout their careers.

Before joining Lionel University, Dr. Nitschke taught undergraduate and graduate courses at several institutions, including the University of Wyoming, the University of Iowa, Laramie County Community College, Western Wyoming Community College, and Northwest College.

Creating Meaningful Learning Experiences for Adult Students

One of Dr. Nitschke’s favorite parts of teaching is working with adult learners.

Adult students often enter the classroom with professional experience, established goals, family responsibilities, and a strong desire to put their education into practice. Dr. Nitschke values the thoughtful perspectives and diverse experiences these students contribute to class discussions.

She is passionate about creating student-centered learning environments that encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and practical application.

Rather than simply memorizing information, students are encouraged to examine research, evaluate evidence, ask meaningful questions, and determine how scientific principles can be applied in professional settings.

This approach helps students develop the confidence needed to make informed decisions as exercise science, fitness, wellness, and health coaching professionals.

Bridging Research and Real-World Practice

Dr. Nitschke’s academic and professional interests include behavior change, health coaching, motivational interviewing, healthy aging, women’s health, exercise adherence, and evidence-based strategies that support long-term health outcomes.

A central focus of her work is translating current research into practical tools that professionals can use with their clients and communities.

Research may provide important information about exercise, wellness, and human behavior, but professionals must also understand how to communicate that information effectively. They need to recognize the barriers clients face, identify appropriate strategies, and help individuals make sustainable changes.

Through her teaching, writing, consulting, and curriculum development, Dr. Nitschke helps future professionals connect these important areas.

An Industry Leader and Curriculum Innovator

In addition to her work in higher education, Dr. Nitschke has served as a curriculum developer, subject matter expert, and education consultant for several respected health and fitness organizations.IMG_1953

Dr. Nitschke has also authored numerous industry publications, contributed to peer-reviewed research, and presented at national and international conferences. She currently serves on the American Council on Exercise Scientific Advisory Panel, where she contributes her expertise to discussions surrounding research, education, and professional practice.

Supporting the Future of Exercise Science Education

As Dean of Academic Innovation and Graduate Studies, Dr. Nitschke helps Lionel University continue evolving to meet the needs of students and the health and fitness industry.

Academic innovation involves more than introducing new technology or updating course materials. It means examining how students learn, identifying the skills professionals need, and designing educational experiences that prepare graduates for a changing workforce.

Dr. Nitschke’s extensive experience as an educator, researcher, curriculum developer, and industry consultant gives her a valuable perspective on how these areas work together.

Her leadership supports Lionel University’s commitment to providing relevant, evidence-based education that helps students advance their knowledge, strengthen their professional skills, and create lasting impact in the communities they serve.
