For Candace Rose, higher education wasn’t always part of the plan—it was something that once felt out of reach.

“I never actually thought I would get this far,” she reflects.

Today, Candace is pursuing her graduate degree in Clinical, Community, and Corporate Wellness, building on a journey that started with uncertainty and has grown into a clear sense of purpose through programs like those offered at Lionel University’s programs overview.

A Second Chance at Education

Candace describes herself as a “late bloomer”—an adult student who didn’t initially see college as attainable. Financial barriers and limited access made it difficult to take that first step.

“I fell in the midpoint where I couldn’t get financial aid, but we didn’t have the means to cover everything either. It just never felt like a real possibility.”

Instead, she began by earning certifications, including becoming a Lionel Certified Personal Trainer and advancing her skills through programs like the Master Trainer certification. Then, one late night, she applied for a scholarship.

“I applied and honestly forgot about it. Months later, I got the call that I received the scholarship. I was like, ‘Game on—let’s do this.’”

That moment marked the beginning of a journey that started with an Associate Degree in Exercise Science, continued through a Bachelor’s Degree, and has now led her into a Master’s program—all without taking a break.

For students who feel stuck financially, resources like Lionel’s financial aid process can open doors that once seemed closed.

Finding Purpose Through Wellness

Candace initially entered the field of exercise science with practical goals in mind—but her motivation quickly evolved into something deeper.

“I came from a rural area where resources were limited. I wanted to come back and give to my community.”

Today, she lives that mission daily. As a group fitness instructor working with older adults—many on fixed incomes—she volunteers her time teaching classes at a local senior center.

“It’s about helping people who don’t have access. I want to promote health and wellness and help people live longer, healthier lives.”

Her passion lies especially in serving the senior population, focusing not just on fitness, but on longevity, mobility, and quality of life.

A Support System That Made the Difference

Having attended other colleges in the past, Candace immediately noticed a difference.

“I’ve never had a bad experience with a professor or advisor here. They’re engaged, they give constructive feedback, and they actually care.”

From prompt grading to meaningful mentorship, that level of support helped her stay motivated and continue progressing.

“It’s hard to improve if you don’t know what you did wrong—and here, you always know where you stand.”

She also found inspiration in the discipline and focus of her peers.

“There’s a level of seriousness and commitment that really helps you stay focused. You’re surrounded by people who want to be there.”

Turning Education Into Opportunity

Candace’s hard work has already paid off. After earning her bachelor’s degree, she landed a role in a weight management program as an exercise physiologist.

“My boss asked if I had a four-year degree, and when I said yes, she said, ‘I want you for this job.’ That’s when I knew—it paid off.”

In her role, she conducts health assessments, tracks progress, and helps clients improve their overall wellness—bridging the gap between fitness and clinical care.

A Mindset Shift: From Sprint to Marathon

One of the biggest lessons Candace learned along the way was changing how she approached her education.

“At first, I thought it was a sprint—just get it done. But I learned it’s really a marathon.”

By taking it step by step—associate, bachelor’s, then master’s—she built momentum without becoming overwhelmed.

“It became, ‘What’s two more years?’ Then, ‘What’s one more year?’ And here I am.”

Flexibility for Real Life

As someone balancing school, work, recovery from surgery, and even house flipping, flexibility has been essential.

“One day I’m working on my house, another day I’m studying. Being able to take one class instead of two when I need to—that balance has been huge.”

That adaptability has allowed her to stay consistent without sacrificing her personal responsibilities.

Looking Ahead

Candace’s long-term goal is clear: to help people stay healthy before they ever need medical intervention.

“I want to be the person who keeps people out of the doctor’s office—helping them stay well through fitness, nutrition, and lifestyle.”

And as for what’s next?

“I’ll always be a learner. If there’s a PhD program—I’m game on.”
