Athletes, Seniors, and Second Chances: Kevin Marine’s Bold Reinvention Through Education and Purpose

Written by Lionel Staff | Mar 5, 2026 5:00:00 PM

In 2007, fresh out of college and newly relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina, Kevin Marine did what many graduates do when reality hits fast—he went to work.

Actually, he went to three jobs.

TJ Maxx. Best Buy. GNC.

All in the same day.

Sixteen-hour shifts. No shortcuts. No complaints. Just grit.

“I needed money,” Kevin says plainly. “So I worked all three in one day.”

But what started as survival quickly became the foundation of a calling.

Discovering Purpose at GNC

Kevin excelled at both Best Buy and GNC. But there was a difference.

At Best Buy, he sold TVs and electronics—products that entertained people.

At GNC, he sold transformation.

“I got to see results live,” he says. “People would buy supplements, get guidance from us, and you could actually watch their wellbeing improve.”

That impact changed everything.

Within eight months, Kevin became the General Manager—the first Black GM in Region 20 in Charlotte. That milestone wasn’t just professional validation. It marked the beginning of his fitness journey.

Soon after, he was recruited by MuscleTech.

From Store Manager to Regional Powerhouse

As a Regional Account Manager for MuscleTech, Kevin traveled across Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and parts of Florida. Week after week, city after city, he delivered up to eight PowerPoint presentations a day to vitamin shops and GNC stores—teaching teams how to sell and position MuscleTech products.

Twice a year, he flew to Canada to visit headquarters and see product manufacturing firsthand.

He later transitioned to a similar regional role with Seor, focusing on South Florida. That move brought him closer to professional athletes—including Miami Dolphins and Miami Heat players.

Eventually, Kevin made a bold decision:

He walked away from corporate America.

“I was only training celebrities or major league athletes,” he says.

It seemed like the dream.

Then 2020 happened.

The Year Everything Stopped

When COVID hit, Florida gyms shut down. Schools and professional organizations restricted independent trainers. Only in-house staff—those who could be monitored through testing—were allowed to continue.

Kevin’s entire livelihood vanished almost overnight.

“I lived off my savings for the whole year of 2020.”

His mother, a respiratory therapist of 30 years, gave him advice that would redirect his future:

“Son, you may want to go back to school. We don’t know when this is going to end.”

Kevin noticed something critical during the shutdowns:

Organized sports never fully stopped.

High schools, colleges, and professional teams adjusted—but they continued playing.

That realization sparked a strategic shift.

“If I had a degree in exercise science, I could get into a school or an organization. I could still train people and make a living.”

He already held 10 certifications through ISSA. When he discovered the College of Exercise Science—what would later become Lionel University—he enrolled in December 2020. His first semester began in February 2021.

At 35 years old, he made the decision to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree at Lionel University and bet on himself.

The Course That Changed Everything: Transformation Specialist

Kevin expected advanced physiology. Programming. Calorie equations.

Instead, one course stopped him in his tracks.

Transformation Specialist.

“When you hear ‘transformation,’ you think fat loss. BMI. Burning 3,500 calories for a pound of fat.”

That’s not what the course was about.

“It was all psychological. How to pour into someone spiritually. Mentally. Goal-oriented. How to change someone from the inside out.”

For someone who had spent years focused on physical performance, this was eye-opening.

“That curriculum taught me that transformation starts in the mind. It’s deeper than physical change.”

Through Lionel’s Bachelor’s in Exercise Science program, Kevin discovered that the most powerful results don’t begin in the gym—they begin in the mind.

It reshaped how he viewed coaching—and how he serves people today.

The Power of People: A University Built on Character

Kevin credits much of his experience not just to coursework, but to the people behind it.

Advisors like Gabe and Brandy supported him throughout the journey. But one story stands out.

In 2023, Kevin struggled in a class taught by Mr. Bob Rollins.

At the time, Kevin’s grandmother—who helped raise him—was dying. He spent her final 14 days in the hospital beside her while trying to keep up with coursework.

When he told his professor he needed space, Mr. Rollins responded differently than anyone else.

“He sent me a long message about valuing time. Valuing family. He poured into me.”

Shortly after, Kevin’s grandmother passed.

On December 14—his birthday—Kevin graduated. During his exit interview, the face on the screen was Mr. Rollins.

He remembered Kevin. The class number. The situation.

They both became emotional.

Then Kevin discovered something he hadn’t known:

Mr. Rollins wasn’t just a professor.

He was the Dean.

“That blew my mind,” Kevin says. “To be that humble. To pour into students like that. That speaks to the character and integrity of Lionel.”

At a Crossroads: Athletes or Seniors?

Today, Kevin works at two physical therapy centers in Boca Raton, Florida:

  • Premier Therapy Solutions – primarily serving senior citizens
  • Costa Performance – focused on athletes

He also served as head trainer at legendary tennis coach Rick Macy’s facility—the same Rick Macy portrayed in King Richard, known for mentoring Venus and Serena Williams.

Kevin has trained:

  • Kids as young as four learning to serve in tennis
  • Professional and elite athletes
  • Adults in their 40s
  • Seniors in their 80s and 90s who simply want to play with their grandchildren again

And now?

He’s applying to Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs.

But he’s torn.

“I came into this saying I only want to deal with athletes. But now… I love working with seniors too.”

Raised largely by his grandparents, Kevin feels at home with older populations. His bedside manner is natural. His empathy is authentic.

“So if you ask me what my practice will focus on after DPT school,” he says honestly, “I have no idea.”

And maybe that’s the point.

His purpose isn’t defined by age groups.

It’s defined by impact.

Why He Recommends Lionel University

At 41, balancing three jobs, raising a son, and managing adult responsibilities, Kevin knows traditional education wouldn’t have worked for him.

Lionel did.

For professionals looking to advance their careers without stepping away from real life, Lionel’s online Bachelor’s Degree program offers the flexibility, accountability, and industry-aligned curriculum Kevin experienced firsthand.

Here’s why he recommends it:

1. Accountability with Integrity

Weekly discussions required depth—not fluff. Professors expected citations, thoughtful responses, and real engagement.

“You couldn’t just write two sentences. They checked the integrity of what you were saying.”

2. Live Interaction

Virtual classroom sessions allowed students to connect with professors and peers.

3. Supportive Administration

From flexible payment plans to accessible faculty, the support system was consistent.

4. Certifications Along the Way

Kevin now holds 14 certifications—including ISSA credentials and a Spartan Race certification—earned while completing his degree.

“You get the education. You get the certifications. And you get the degree.”

5. Built for Working Professionals

“For someone like me—working three jobs—learning from home was amazing. I couldn’t have sat in a classroom eight hours a day.”

The Bigger Transformation

Kevin Marine’s journey isn’t just about fitness.

It’s about resilience.
It’s about reinvention.
It’s about understanding that true transformation begins in the mind.

From 16-hour workdays…
To corporate leadership…
To training elite athletes…
To surviving a global shutdown…
To earning his degree at 41…

And now, stepping toward a Doctor of Physical Therapy.

Kevin’s story proves something powerful:

Physical strength may open doors.

But mental transformation changes lives.

And that’s the kind of work he plans to do for the rest of his.
